About the artist

Marianne Holtermann, the artist

As a self-taught artist I started painting only a few years ago when a combination of circumstances gave me the encouragement and inspiration to try my hand at something I had always longed to do.

My preferred medium is pastels for their brilliant colors, multiple possibilities and ease of use.

I am constantly learning and evolving as an artist. I enjoy experimenting with color, style and subject matter. Forms, lines, color and their juxtaposition is what captivates me in a landscape, be it natural or manmade. People fascinate me when they convey an emotion, a message, or make me curious.

And then there is the light…… it’s all about the light.

In my art I try to capture not only what I see, but also the feelings the subject evoke in me. It is my hope that the viewer will connect with my art emotionally -  not just as something that is pleasing to the eye.

Over the years I have been taking thousands of photos and continue to do so. Some of these photos now serve as inspiration  and reference.

I have exhibited locally at Firehouse gallery in Milford, as well as Milford Arts Center, Lyme Art Association Gallery, Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, City-Wide Open Studios New Haven, New Haven Paint and Clay Club and Colors of Humanity Art on-line gallery
